What is wildlife rehabilitation?
Treatment and temporary care of injured, diseased and displaced animals and subsequent release of healthy animals to appropriate habitats in the wild
What are some pros of wildlife rehabilitation?
Moral responsibility as most accidents are due to human activity
Biodiversity
Conservation
Food chain
Reduces suffering
What are some cons of wildlife rehabilitation?
Death is a part of nature
Wrong for humans to interfere
Only focuses on individual animal, not wider environment (other animal could eat dead carcass)
How to handle wild rodents?
Same as pet/ lab rodents but more likely to bite
Need to wear latex gloves to prevent zoonosis
How to handle wild squirrels?
They often freeze and hold their breath or will act aggressively
Caught using nets, wire cones or squeeze cages made for cats
Don’t use leather gauntlet as they can bite through it
How to handle hedgehogs
They ball up when scared, so tip it like a wheelbarrow to get head out
Use latex gloves to protect from zoonosis
What disease can you get from hedgehogs?
Lungworm
How should you handle foxes and badger/
Caught by net/ box
Restrain using a quick release dog catcher
Sedation preferred over concious restraint
Can use muzzles/ scruff
Full barrier nursing PPE

Treatment and immediate/ next day release
Treatment and rehabilitation period prior to release

What should in pracitce set ups have for wildlife?
Quiet, warm, secure and away from cats/ dogs
Newspaper, towels, hay, straw
Hides and shelters
Hygiene
Barrier nursing

Also called capture shock
