Q

What are signs and treatment for fluke? (ENDOPARASITE)

A
  • Reduced growth rate
  • Sudden death
Treatment is more about prevention—> avoid areas where mud snails are, as they will lay eggs that contain pathogen
  • Use flukicides

Q

Explain the signs and transmission route of toxoplasm gondii?

15
Q

What are the clinical signs and treatment of chlamydia abortus?

A
  • Infected by becoming into contact with infected placenta or aborted lambs
  • Ewes show no clinical signs of infection, but birth of weak or aborted lambs
  • Treatment is isolating aborting ewes and vaccinate.
  • Pregnant women should avoid due to zoonosis

16
Q

What are the clinical signs, transmission method and treatment for campylobacter fetus?

A
  • Ewes show no clinical signs other than aborted/ weak lambs
  • Transmission is usually via a carrier animal that has fed in water bowls and passed on spores
  • Isolate aborting ewes and remove material, vaccine not licensed in this country
17
Q

What does the term iceberg diseases mean?

A

Only a few animals that are actually infected show the symptoms, this is usually because the clinical signs develop very late or are mild

18
Q

What is a clostridial disease, treatment and some examples?

A

Common diseases that are widespread in environment, due to spores usually in soil. Show no clinical signs before sudden death.
No treatment due to the sudden death aspect, however vaccine can be given to ewe who passes antibodies to lamb
- Pulpy kidney
- Struck
- Lamb dysentery
- Tetanus

19
Q

How long is the sheep gestation period?

A

142-147 days

20
Q

What are the three stages of labour in a ewe?

A
  1. (Lasts 2-6 hrs) Cervical dilation, abdominal contractions, isolating themselves, appearance of water bag
  2. (Lasts 1hr) Delivery of lamb
  3. (Within 2-3 hrs of stage 2) delivery of placenta
21
Q

What are some signs that intervention is needed during lambing?

A
  • Ewe trying to deliver for more than 1 hour
  • Lamb visible for more than 20 mins with no progress
  • Not in correct presentation
  • Vaginal prolapse
22
Q

What are the signs of hypothermia in a lamb

A

Lambs older than 5 hrs won’t have brown adipose (belly fat) anymore
Temperature lower than 39C

23
Q

Where do you inject the intraperitoneal injection and what % glucose?

A

1 inch down and away from naval cavity.
20%

24
Q

What are the signs and treatment of entropian?

A

Lower eyelid rolls in and rubs against eye
Runny and cloudy eyes
Treatment—> penicillin parallel to eyelid

25
Q

What are the main two abortion diseases in sheep?

A

Campylobacter
Toxoplasmosis

26
Q

When should you give the toxoplasmosis and chlyamidia abortus vaccines?

A

Toxoplasmosis three weeks prior to tupping and is known to provide protection for at least two lambing seasons. Enzovaxâ (EAE vaccine) should be given at least four weeks prior to tupping and is known to provide protection for at least three lambing season

27
Q

What weight are lambs slaughtered

A

50% of their mature weight
