describe rabies infection
transmitted from bite of infected animal
travels to brain through peripheral nerves
causes acute encephalities- malaise, fever, headache
unable to swallow, death by respiratory failure
diagnosis- PCR of saliva
what to give after been bitten
give post-exposure prophylaxis human rabies immunoglobulin (HRIG)
infiltrated round the bite (if possible)
+4 doses of rabies vaccine over 14 days
describe brucellosis infection
hazard or farmers, vets
during milking, eating unpasteurised products
treat with doxycycline, rifampicin, IM gentamicin
describe lepatospirosis infection
fever in cattle farmer
doxycycline or IV penicillin
describe Lyme disease infection
transmitted by tick
presents with erythema chronic migrans rash
lymphocytoma
test with ELISA
what do you treat Lyme disease with
iv doxycycline or amoxicillin
