What is a reservoir?
Something that harbours an infection agent, without it harming itself. Can be living or inanimate
What is direct transmission?
Requires direct or close contact between reservoir or host
What is a fomite?
Thing, object or material that transmits infectious agent from reservoir or host
What is indirect transmission?
Involves a fomite
What are some examples of bacterial zoonoses? (4)
Brucellosis
Cat Scratch Fever
Leptospirosis
Salmonellosis
What is Brucellosis?
STD causing aborted fetus
Can be passed to humans through undercooked meat
What is Cat Scratch Fever?
Bacteria found in cat’s saliva, can be caught through flea’s feces (fomite)
What is Leptospirosis?
Caused by contact with infected urine,
can cause acute kidney disease in humans
What is the most common cause or salmonellosis?
Feeding raw diet
What are some examples of Viral Zoonoses?
Rabies
Hantavirus
Avian Influenza
How common is rabies in BC’s bat population?
0.5% of bats carry rabies
10% of bats behaving abnormally found to have rabies
How is Hantavirus contracted?
Spread through contact with rodent feces
What are examples of Parasitic Zoonoses?
Scabies (Mites)
Giardiasis (bever fever)
Toxoplasmosis (cats litter box)
What are some examples of Mycotic Zoonosis?
Ringworm
Cryptococcus
