Immunology Flashcards
What is an antigen?
The bad organism your body is fighting, such as bacteria or virus
What is an antibody?
Something your body produces as an immune response to fight antigen
What are the 2 types of immunity?
Innate
Acquired
What is Innate immunity?
Basic resistance to disease, such as skin, stomach acid, mucous membranes
What are the types of Acquired immunity?
Active-antibodies made after coming into contact with antibody
Passive-maternal antibodies
What are the types of Active Immunity?
Humoral=body reacting to antibodies
Cell mediated=lymphocytes created to fight antigen
Mucosal=tissues and lymphoid cells
What happens during a Primary response in a vaccine?
First time your body encounters an antigen. Antibodies climb for 7 days, then fall back down
What happens during Secondary response to a vaccine?
Rapid increase in antibodies after 24 hours, and they stay up
What are the types of Vaccines we administer?
Modified Live=modified version of virus
Killed=Dead virus
Recombinant=mix virus with another virus
What is a Vaccine induced Sarcoma?
Sarcoma that develops at vaccine site
What are the core vaccines for dogs?
Rabies Distemper Hepatitis Parainfluenza Parvovirus Coronavirus
What are lifestyle vaccines for dogs?
Leptospirosis
Bordatella
Lyme
Canine influenza
What is added to a Killed vaccine to cause an immune response?
Adjuvent
What are the core Feline vaccines?
Rabies
Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis (FVR)
Calcivirus
Panleukopenia
What are the feline lifestyle vaccines?
Feline Leukemia FeLv
Feline Immunodeficiency FIV (like HIV)
What is Titre testing?
Testing the blood for antibodies to see whether you need to be revaccinated
Does not tell how effective the antibodies are
What is a challenge study?
Challenge the immune system to see how effective the immune system fights an antigen by infecting the animal
What are normal vaccine reactions?
Lethargy, small lump, small fever
What are vaccine overreactions?
Vomiting, facial swelling, hives
At what ages are vaccines typically given?
8, 12, and 16 weeks
When is the first rabies vaccine typically given?
12 weeks
How many ug in a g?
1000000 (1 million)
What does FVR stand for?
Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis
