Zoo lab 3 - histology 1 (smooth/muscle) Flashcards
Histology
the study of tissues
Germinal layer
The long cells at the bottom of the stratified squamous epithelial tissue complex that are capable of mitotically dividing to support the layers above it.
Cornified layer
The flat cells at the top of the stratified squamous epithelial tissue complex. They are keratinized.
Glands deep to the skin in frogs are composed of what tissue?
Epithelial tissue
Basement membrane
The basal lamina. It is beneath the structure of squamous epithelial tissue.
What is the kidney primarily composed of?
Simple cuboidal epithelium
Simple cuboidal ET
cells are cube-shaped with a nucleus in the middle
Simple Squamous ET
Cells are flat
Where can you find epithelial tissue?
Lines the inside and outside of organs, governing what exits and enters organs.
Simple Columnar ET
Cells are elongated and have a nucleus near the base of the cell.
Smooth muscle
Unconscious control, flat with an elongated central nuclei.
Cardiac muscle
Unconscious control. Only found in vertebrates. Can be differentiated by intercalated discs, branching, and striations. Central nuclei.
A bands vs I bands
A bands are dArk, I bands are L(I)ght. A bands are myosin or overlapping myosin and actin. I bands are actin alone. Myosin pulls on the actin to shorten the muscle, thus contracting it.
Skeletal muscle
The most abundant tissue in the body. Under conscious control. Striated. Multinucleated. Peripheral nuclei.
Two classes of muscle, generally
Smooth and Striated
