Zill - Parotid Flashcards
Temporal Fossa Contents?
Superficial Temporal Artery
Auriculo-Temporal Nerve (V3)
Infratemporal Fossa Clinically Relevant Contents?
Maxillary Artery
Source of blood supply to nasal cavity, calvarium, oral cavity, middle ear; location of muscles of mastication
What is a clinical outcome of the maxillary artery’s location?
Can not ligate, bleeding (nosebleed = epistaxis) treated by cauterization of branches
Maxillary Artery - Part 1
(Most Posterior)
- Deep Auricular
- Anterior Tympanic
- Middle Meningeal
- Accessory meningeal (Foramen Ovale)
5. Inferior Alveolar (diving into bone w/nerve)
Clinical: Damage to Middle Meningeal
Epidural Hematoma
Uncal Herniation - Push temporal lobe through tentorial notch
Tonsillar Herniation - Push Cerebellum (tonsil) through foramen magnum
Maxillary Artery - Part 2
(Mostly Muscles)
- Deep Temporal Artery
- Pterygoid Artery
- Masseteric Artery
- Buccal Artery
Maxillary Artery - Part 3
(Through Foramina)
- Posterior Superior Alveolar
- Descending Palatine
- Artery of Pterygoid Canal
- Sphenopalatine
- Infraorbital
Clinical: Pterygoid Venous Plexus
Anastomose with Cavernous Sinus and Facial Vein
Can contribute to spread of infection from teeth, nasal cavity, palate to brain
What portion of the TMJ can cause issues with lock-jaw?
How does the joint move?
Articular Tubercle (anterior to joint)
Temporo-mandibular (Lateral) Ligament
Upper compartment = Sliding
Lower compartment = Hinge
Innervation for muscles of mastication?
What is the major role of these muscles?
All Branchiomotor V3
Most close mouth to chew food, need less to open mouth
Role of Lateral Pterygoid?
How is this muscle clinically relevant in TMJ?
Pulls disc anteriorly when open mouth
The muscle can cause the jaw to become stuck on the Articular Tubercle
Action for Lateral and Medial Pterygoid?
Action for Temporals and Masseter?
Pull jaw toward opposite side
Pull jaw toward same side
Clinical: Symptom observed in jaw with Trigeminal Nerve damage?
Jaw deviates TOWARD paralyzed side due to unopposed action of Lateral Pterygoid muscle of intact side
Innervation of Parotid?
Clinical issues with Parotid?
Parasymp (Visceral Motor) of CN IX (Glossopharyngeal)
Clinical: Viral infection of parotid, swelling painful, referred pain to ear from compression of Auriculo-Temporal Nerve
