What led to high levels of Immigration in the U.S.?
The promise of jobs (especially during the 19th century/1800s) especially to obtain jobs in the railroad, so there became a large amount of competition) which in turn led to a renewed sense of nativism. (A group of people who moved and believed they are now native. Pissed the real natives off. Lead to ethnic and racial animosity).
With high levels of immigration, how did the rest of the U.S. respond?
Pissed natives off, led to ethnic and racial animosity, and a sense of Nativism.
What did Immigration lead to?
Nativist policies in the 20th century (early 1900’s) led to legislation like…
- The Chinese Exclusion Act
- The Gentleman’s agreement
What was the Gentleman’s agreement?
A handshake agreement between US and Japan-restrict your own people to not move to the U.S.
What was the Monroe Doctrine?
Introduced in 1923 and asserted U.S. power for forbidding further European colonization or interference in the Americas. No more colonization, no government say. Stated dominance.
-(The Monroe Doctrine is a policy of the United State introduced on December 2, 1823. It stated that further efforts by European nations to colonize land or interfere with states in North or South America would be viewed as acts of aggression requiring U.S. intervention.)
