What caused the civil war to occur?

A
  • stemmed from south’s resistance to the north’s abolitionist movement, and was accelerated by the shift in federal power that occurred when California was admitted to the union as a free state.
  • South knew slavery would want to be abolished so they wanted to SECEDE (withdraw their alliance) from the union.

What are Secessionists?

A

The new nation the south created. They called their union “The Confederate States of America”
You have the confederates (slave owners) fighting the union (north)

A

Jefferson Davis. They established their own government and they had their own capitol in Richmond, Virgina.

A

The North- Larger population, more developed manufacturing base- better weapons, better transportation network.

The South- better military leaders/southern generals

A

1862-1865 - 4 years! Should have only been 2 but the south’s strategies were played very well.

What was the north’s strategy in beating the South?

A
  1. Try to isolate the south, close off shipping
  2. Tried to capture the south capital (ended up moving)
  3. Split them, make them fight a two front war.
  4. Isolate and starve them out, they only had cotton, and cash crops like that, but not much food. It was a war of who could outlast who.
  5. Tried to prevent south from invading them.

A

Serge into the North and try to take control of trade-routes, supply lines, etc.

What was the Battle of Fort Sumter?

A

Not a huge battle, but the very first one so its important. Beauregard (south general) fires on Federal fort in Charleston Harbor. The North thought it was a joke at first, they were so confident.

Antietum

A

Single bloodiest day of the civil war. McClellan (North) ends Lee’s (south leader) invasion of the North- First major attempt by south to serge into the north.

Chancellorville

A

Major win for the South. Lee (south) defeated Hooker’s Army of Potomac, but Stonewall Jackson (south) is killed. Bittersweet because Southern General Stonewall Jackson was killed. His own troops thought he was an enemy as he rode back.

A

Lee (South) loses to Meade (North), Pickett’s (south) charge fails, ends second invasion of the North. South’s last chance to serge into the North. Beginning of the end.
Turning point, South failing.

Appomattox

A

Lee’s forces are surround and Lee is forced to surrender. (South) end of the Civil. Though there are a still few small skirmishes to follow, the war is over.
