- The “Norse” (Vikings/Scandinavian) before Columbus.
- “John Cabot”- made the first voyage to America for England
- “Coronado” explored the American Southwest (San Diego)
- “Christopher Columbus”- Four major trips to the Americas, Columbus took Native American slaves back to Spain. Also established poorly managed agricultural and mining camps which Native Americans were often raped, tortured, and forced to perform Slave labor.

Distinct Economic regions. What do the colonies “specialize” in?
New England colonies -Shipbuilding and commerce
Middle colonies- Farming and commerce (lots of food crops)
Southern colonies- Tobacco and cotton (lots of cash crops)
South-more slavery. Later creates conflict.
Massachusetts Bay Colony
Established by Puritans. (LEFT ENGLAND TO START A NEW CHURCH) Wanted to break away from the church and establish a more pure church in America. Pilgrims. Would spread out eventually, like Rhode Island.
New York Colony
first settled by the dutch, but then England overtook them. They gave this region to the Duke of York (hence, New York)

Farming, founded by Quakers- farming and religious group.
