YR 8 - Chemistry [Using Chemistry + Enviromental Chemistry] Flashcards
What is the scientific term for burning?
Burning is also known as combustion.
What are the products of complete combustion?
The products of complete combustion are carbon dioxide and water.
What are the products of incomplete combustion?
The products of incomplete combustion are carbon monoxide and water OR carbon and water.
What is the conservation of mass?
In a chemical reaction, mass is not gained or lost. This is known as the conservation of mass.
What are catalysts?
Catalysts are substances that speed up the rate of a reaction without being used up itself.
How do industries use catalysts?
Industries use catalysts to speed up reactions and reduce costs.
What is acid rain?
Substance in which sulphur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide has been dissolved making it acidic is called acid rain.
What does acid rain do?
Acid rain reacts with the rocks and buildings made of limestone.
What is global warming?
Global warming is the process in which the atmosphere is heating up overtime.
What are green house gases and what do they do?
Gases that contribute to global warming are carbon dioxide, water vapour and methane etc. which are called green house gases.
What are 2 effects of global warming?
2 effects of global warming are severe weather changes and rising sea levels.
What is the carbon cycle?
The carbon cycle is the process of many stages in which the element carbon moves from non-living materials into living things and back again.
What is recycling?
Recycling is to take old, unwanted products and use the materials to make new products.
What are the 5 stages of a LCA (Life cycle analysis)?
The 5 stages of a LCA are extraction, processing, manufacture, use and disposal.
