YR 8 - Biology [Nutrition + Digestion] Flashcards
What is a healthy diet?
A healthy diet is one that consists of the seven components eaten in the correct quantities.
How many carbohydrates are there and what are they called?
There are two types of carbohydrates; simple and complex.
What is an example of a simple and complex carbohydrate?
An example of simple carbohydrates is glucose and of complex carbohydrates is starch.
What are the seven components of a healthy diet?
The seven components of a healthy diet are proteins, carbohydrates, fats, minerals, vitamins, fibre and water.
What are proteins needed for?
Proteins are needed in the body for growth and repair.
What are carbohydrates needed for?
Carbohydrates are needed for energy.
What are fats needed for?
Fats are needed to store energy and for insulation.
What are fibres needed for?
Fibre is needed to keep the food moving through the gut.
What do you require more of when you exercise?
The more exercise you do, the more energy you will need, so the more carbohydrates and fats you will need in your diet.
How can you analyse the food you eat?
You can analyse the food you eat by carrying out food tests.
What solutions are used to test for glucose, proteins and starch?
Benedicts solution is used to test for glucose, Biuret is the test for proteins and iodine solution is used to test for starch.
How is obesity caused?
Obesity is caused by taking too much energy containing food and not using it so the excess goes on to the body as fat.
How can you measure the energy content of food?
You can measure the energy content of food by burning it under a boiling tube of water and measuring the temperature change.
How can you find out the energy contents of food?
Different foods contain different amounts of energy. We can find out the energy content of food by reading the nutritional information on the packet.
What is energy measured in?
Energy is measured in Kilojoules and Joules.
