YR 8 - Biology [Plant Nutrition + Ecosystem] Flashcards
What is the cytoplasm?
The cytoplasm is a jelly like substance in which reactions takes place.
What is the chloroplast?
The chloroplasts contain chlorophyll to absorb light energy from the sun.
What is the cell wall?
The cell wall is made of cellulose and gives the cell as rigid structure.
What is the cell membrane?
The cell membrane controls what enters and leaves a cell.
What is the nucleus?
The nucleus is where the genetic material is found.
What is the mitochondria?
The mitochondria is where respiration takes place releasing energy from food.
What are amoebas?
Amoeba are unicellular organisms that have pseudopods to help them move.
What are euglenas?
Euglena are unicellular organisms that have chloroplast s so that they can photosynthesise and produce their own food.
What happens during photosynthesis?
During photosynthesis chlorophyll absorbs sunlight and used its energy to convert carbon dioxide and water into glucose. Oxygen is also produced.
What is the word equation for photosynthesis?
The word is equation for photosynthesis is:
carbon dioxide + water —> glucose + oxygen.
How have leaves adapted to carry out photosynthesis?
Leaves are adapted for carrying out photosynthesis. They are broad, have cells with lots of chloroplast at the top of the leaf and have a stomata on the bottom of the leaf.
How do you test a leaf for starch?
To test a leaf for starch you add a few drops of iodine. If starch is present the iodine will change colour from orange to blue black.
What is ethanol used for?
Ethanol is used to remove the chlorophyll from a leaf so that you can see a colour change in iodine.
What does dropping a leaf into boiling water do?
Dropping a leaf into boiling water breaks down the cell walls and release the contents of the cell so that you can test to see whether starch is present.
What do plants do with extra glucose?
Plants store any extra glucose they produce in photosynthesis as starch.
