Yellow Belt Chapter 7: What is a Process? Flashcards
What is a process?
A process is a collection of tasks, steps, or activities that are performed, usually in a specific order, and result in an end product such as a tangible good or the provision of a service.
Four Layers of the Process Definition
- ) The Steps
- ) Processing Time of a Process
- ) Interdependencies between Processes (Process Map)
- ) Major Resource Components
The Steps
All processes are a series of steps; the instructions that make up a process map is broken down by steps.
Processing Time
The processing time is the average time a process takes. There are measures of variation in the processing time. You need real time surveillance to completely understand processing time duration.
Interdependencies
Interdependencies is based on the idea that all processes are dependent on the timing and production within a previous process.
Resources and Assignment
Major resources are mapped and distributed among the processes.
Process Owners
A lean Six sigma team should understand the process owners. They have the power to approve changes. Remember looking at the power vs interest chart? Yes, they have the ability to help provide resources as well.
What does a process owner do?
They can function as:
- experts for a process
- a team supervisor/department manager
- an executive who is in charge of multiple processes
Defining Process Components: The SIPOC
A very important part of the Design Phase of Lean Six Sigma Project. This a swimlane diagram used to understand the process in question, in depth:
SIPOC Stands for:
-Suppliers, Input, Process, Output, Customers
Benefits of a SIPOC Diagram
SIPOC Diagram is HIGHLY SCALABLE:
