White Belt Chapter 1: What is 6s? Flashcards
What is the principle of 6 sigma?
- a process methodology should be constant w/o variation.
- why? because variation-> leads to opportunities for error ->defects in product -> POOR CUSTOMER SATISFACTION (Customer’s voice)
Data Driven Processes and Decisions. What Does that Mean?
Goal of a 6s operation is to base implemented strategies from data + metrics.
Provides mathematical + statistical foundation for decision making.
Decision Making w/o 6S
Problem with making decisions w/o 6s is that it causes redundant issues.
Ex: Would be having to go back and fix other problems that were incurred after applying a strategy.
Decision Making with Six Sigma
benefits:
-highly accurate when understanding the problem in a process
- understanding the root cause of a problem
- gives visualized and predicted outcomes less financial risk
Defining 6 Sigma
6 sigma is statistical perfection:
- 3.4 defects per million units created
- as you go from 6-5-4-3 sigma levels
- the customer satisfaction decreases
Calculating Sigma Level
Yield= (# of opportunities- #of defects)/ (# of opportunities)=
% Yield
That % Yield can be looked up to give a Sigma Level
Sigma Level is Not a Final Indicator
When talking about improving a process- you need to look at multiple things together.
- Leadership should cover: (costs, resources, and estimated impact on improvements)
- Also understand the 80/20 Pareto Rule (multiple processes involved, which one is most important?)
Common Six Sigma Principles
- Customer Focused Improvement
- understanding the process value stream (SIPOC)
- Continuous Process Improvement
- Removing Variation @ all processes
- Removing waste or “muda” (DOWN-TIME Acronym)
-Equipping People-
once a 6 sigma team understands the process and has implemented issue soln. They need to let business process owner know & also other employees.
- Controlling the Process
- once a process is fixed, employees need to know how to manage those processes with graphical/statistical data analysis (control charts) to maintain productivity/sigma level.
Challenges of 6 Sigma
Some people don’t see the value of 6 sigma:
- lack of support
- lack of resources
- poor project execution
- data access issues
