Protection, support and movement

The mandible
What is the bone in the upper arm called?
Humerus
What is the bone in front of your ribcage called?
Sternum
What are the two bones in the bottom half of your arm called?
Ulna and radius
What is the bone in your upper leg called?
Femur
What are the bones in the lower leg called?
Shinbone/ tibia and fibula
What is the scientific name for the collarbone?
Clavicle
What is the scientific name for the skull?
Cranium
What bone protects the heart?
The ribcage
What bone protects the brain?
The skull
What bone protects the lungs?
Ribcage
What bone protects the spinal cord?
Backbone
What bone protects the reproductive organs?
Pelvis
List the parts of a synovial joint and what they do
Joint capsule with synovial fluid - lubricates bones and the joint
Cartilage - soft material that prevents bones from contact
Tendon - joins muscle to bone
Ligament - joins bone to bone
Why must muscles work in pairs?
They can only pull or contact, so pairs of muscles are needed to bend (flex) and straighten (extend) a joint
What are two muscles working against each other called?
Antagonistic
What is the equation for a moment?
Moment = force times distance
What is the unit of moment?
Nm (Newton metre)
What are the types of freely movable joints?
Gliding joints, hinge joints, saddle joints and ball and socket joints
