Year 8 Environment Flashcards
What does a food chain represent?
The movement of energy and nutrients from one organism to another
What are the positions on the food chain?
Producer > Primary consumer > Secondary consumer > Tertiary consumer > Quaternary consumer
What are the parts of a plant?
Stigma, Ovary, Style, Nectary, Carpel, Anther, Petal, Filament, Ovule, Stamen
SOS N’CAPFOS
Why are seeds dispersed?
So there is less competition for space and light
What are the four ways seeds can be dispersed?
Wind, water, animal, explosions
What are the three conditions needed for a seed to germinate?
Moisture, oxygen, warmth
What is pollination?
Pollination is the transfer of pollen from the anthers of a flower to the stigma of the same or another flower
What is fertilisation in plants?
The fusion of the nuclei from a male and female sex cell. The male gamete is inside the pollen grain and the female gamete is inside the ovule
What is the scientific name for sex cells?
Gametes
What happens when an ovule is fertilised?
It grows a seed
What happens after fertilisation?
Most parts of the flower wither and die. The ovary gets bigger and forms the fruit. Inside the fruit are seeds
What is bioaccumulation?
The build up of pesticides through the food chain
What is a biomass pyramid?
A pyramid showing the amount of relative biomass in each level of the food chain.
What is a number pyramid?
A pyramid showing the amount of relative populations in each level of the food chain
