Year 8 Science | Metals and Non Metals Flashcards
What are the typical properties of metals?
shiny, strong, high melting point, conduct electricity, malleable, ductile
Give 4 properties of non-metals
Low melting point, Poor thermal and electrical conductors, Brittle
Metals are ‘malleable’. What does this mean?
They can be hammered into shape
Are all metals magnetic?
no; iron, nickel and cobalt are
Where are metals found on the Periodic Table?
To the left of the step line
Are most elements metals or non-metals?
Metals
What is an oxidation reaction?
A substance combining with oxygen
Is a non-metal oxide acidic or basic?
acidic
Is a metal oxide acidic or basic
basic
Define “reactant”
Substances that react together
Define “product”
Substances made in a reaction
Finish the word equation: carbon + oxygen –>
carbon dioxide (or monoxide if low on oxygen)
Finish the word equation: sulphur + oxygen –>
sulphur dioxide (causes acid rain)
Which gas is produced when a metal reacts with acid?
Hydrogen
What is the general equation for a metal-acid reaction?
Metal + acid -> salt + hydrogen
What is observed when a metal reacts with acid?
Bubbles in the solution (gas given off)
How can we compare reactivity of metals?
Compare how vigorous/strong the reaction is e.g. lots of bubbles
If a salt contains two elements only, what ending is given to the name? (extension only)
“-ide”
If a salt contains more than two elements (including oxygen), what ending is given to the name? (extension only)
“-ate”
Which salt type is produced hydrochloric acid reacts?
Metal chloride
Which salt type is produced when sulphuric acid reacts?
Metal sulphate
Which salt is produced when nitric acid is used to make it?
Metal nitrate
What is the state symbol for a solid?
(s)
What is the state symbol for a liquid?
(l)
