Y8 Science | Respiration Flashcards
What is respiration?
A chemical reaction which releases energy for the cell
Where does aerobic respiration occur?
In the mitochondria
What is the name for respiration with oxygen?
Aerobic
Define aerobic respiration
Glucose reacts with oxygen to release energy
Give the equation for aerobic respiration
glucose + oxygen -> carbon dioxide + water
Define ‘anaerobic respiration’
Glucose is broken down without oxygen to release energy
What do plants make in anaerobic respiration?
Ethanol and carbon dioxide
Which type of respiration releases more energy?
Aerobic
Why do we breathe faster when we run?
More oxygen needed for respiration
When do animals use anaerobic respiration?
When not enough oxygen is available to muscles
What is made when animals do anaerobic respiration?
lactic acid
What problems can lactic acid cause?
discomfort e.g. a stitch when you run
Give one use of yeast doing anaerobic respiration.
Making alcohol
State the word equation for fermentation
Glucose –> Ethanol + Carbon dioxide
Why does bread dough need sugar?
To feed the yeast - give fuel for respiration
