What are the 5 major types of bones in the body?
Short, Long, Flat, Irregular, Sesamoid
What is a “short bone”?
Roughly cubical, that is they have the same width and length
What are some examples of short bones?
- Carpals of the wrist
- Tarsals of the foot
What is a “long bone”?
Are longer than they are wide and have a hollow shaft containing marrow
What are some examples of long bones?
Femur, phalanges and humerus
What is a “flat bone”?
Provide flat areas for attachment of muscles and usually enclose cavities for protection of organs
What are some examples of flat bones?
Scapula, Ribs, Sternum and cranium
What is a “irregular bone”?
Have no regular shape characteristics
What are some examples of irregular bones?
Vertebrae and bones of the face
What is a “sesamoid bone”?
Are small bones developed/embedded within a tendon or muscle
What are some examples of sesamoid bones?
Patella in knee joint
