X-Ray Processing Flashcards
What is digital radiography?
-digital image is produced either onto a plate directly or directly to the computer unit
-positioning, collimation and exposure settings are still carried out by a radiographer
What are the 2 types of digital radiography?
Computed radiography
Digital radiography
What are the advantages of using digital radiography?
-greater tolerance
-visualise a range of tissues
-ability to computer manipulate the image
-saves space
-cannot lose radiographs
What equipment is required for computed radiography?
-imaging plate
-cassette
-CR system
-CR reader
How does computed radiography work?
What are the advantages of using computed radiography?
-reduced exposure times
-reduced safety area
-safer to use
-sedation time is reduced
-reduced hazards
-better image quality
How does digital radiography work?
-produces an almost instantaneous image on the display screen without the processing stages
What is the difference between indirect and direct digital radiography?
Indirect = produce electrical signals via an intermediate light phase
Direct = convert x-ray energy directly into digitised electrical energy
What is the structure of digital radiography?
-flat panel containers contain a thin film transistor array, made of amorphous selenium which are arranged in a matrix
-image detectors are wired to the computer, making it less flexible than CR
What are the disadvantages of using digital radiography?
-expensive
-requires a full set up including the x-ray machine itself
-less flexible than computed radiography
What are the advantages of using digital radiography?
-real time image
-high quality of images produced
-zoom facility allows area to be magnified
-beneficial for orthopaedics
How are digital radiography images stored?
As digital imaging and communication medicine
(DICOM)
-allows the image to be imbedded with patient details, owner details, species, breed and area imaged
What does the picture archive and communication system allow?
-allows images to be automatically saved and stored to a secure location
-stores patient details and vet details
What are the benefits of using picture archive systems?
-recent radiographs can be stored with previous images
-enables a continuity of patient care and assessment
What is teleradiology?
-ability to transfer digital files from one location to another
-used in referral cases
