Why did Britain declare war on Germany?
Because Germany invaded Belgium’s neutrality during the Schlieffan Plan
What was the attitude towards war?
People greeted war with enthusiasm and believe it will be over soon

Why did WW1 become a world war?
Because many European countries had colonies overseas which got involved in the war
What was the Schiefflan Plan?
A planned surprise attack on France by Germany what would attack France via Belgium. The plan failed and Britain got involved in the war
What was Plan 17?
A plan for France to attack Germany and take back Alsace and Lorraine but they underestimated Germany and failed
Why was there an increase in technology?
From the Industrial a Revolution an new scientific breakthroughs
What were some of the new weapons used in WW1?
Barbed Wire, Poison Gas including mustard gas and tear gas, Tanks and Aircraft
Where was the Western Front?
A trench system in France that stretched from the Swiss border to the coast. 435 miles long
What were conditions in the trenches like?
Appalling conditions, very wet and muddy
What and when was the battle of Passchendaele?
July 1917. Allied attempt to break through Flanders in Belgium. It was a failure and they lost many men
What and when was the battle of Fromelles?
19 July 1917, Australian distraction to Germany. Failure as Germans realised it was a distraction
What and when was the battle of Dernancourt?
4-9 April 1918. Germany advance on towns in Norther France. Allied victory
Why did Russia withdraw from the war?
In 1917 due to the Russian Revolution and civil war.
Why did the Allies start to win WW1?
They began to win many significant battles and America entered the war in 1917
Why did the Germans start to lose?
German Revolution on the Homefront in 1918

November 11 1918
What were the causes of WW1?
