China, North Vietnam, Eastern Bloc countries
Who were the USA’s allies?
Australia, South Vietnam, France, Britain
What were America’s policies against communism?
Containment- America’s job to stop communism growing stronger
Domino theory- If one country fell to communism the others around them would fall too
What happened in the Cuban Missile Crisis?
October 1962- Nuclear missiles found in Cuba that threatened America. Kennedy put naval blockade on USSR and they agreed on a trade-off of bases in Cuba and Turkey
What happened after the Cuban Missile Crisis?
Everyone thought the world was going to end
1963- Nuclear Test Ban Treaty
Kurshchev lost prestige
What happened during the Arms Race?
The USSR and USA competed to see who could develop the most destructive weapon- atomic and hydrogen bombs
What happened with the Berlin Wall?
In August 1961 the USSR put up a wall between East and West Berlin because too many refugees were fleeing East Berlin
What happened during the Korean War?
North Korea became communist and in 1950 North Korea invaded the South. America fought to protect South Korea until 1953 when peace was achieved after nuclear war was threatened
What happened during the Petrov Affair?
A Russian spy in Australia defected to Australia and they kidnapped his wife
What happened when Menzies tried to ban the Communist Party?
It didn’t work because it was un democratic and censorship just like Communism
What happened when the Berlin Wall fell?
It was in November 1989 and German celebrated and had freedom to travel but many people stayed in East Berlin
How did the Cold War end?
In 1991 with the collapse of the USSR and Eastern Bloc countries when they overthrew their governments
What were the main differences between USSR and USA?
Communism vs Democratic Capitalism
