How is a PDO different from a PGI?

A

A PDO is a specific region, smaller area, with tightly defined regulations concerning irrigation, winemaking techniques.
A PGI is more lax, allowing winemakers to use non-traditional varieties in a blend (e.g. Chardonnay in the South of France)
