Wound healing Flashcards

1
Q

When is healing initiated

A

when inflammation begins. it occurs with a combination of regeneration and repair.

Q

What is regeneration

A

it is the replace damaged tissue with native tissue. it depends on regenerative capacity of tissue and are divided into 3 regenerative capacity.

Q

What is labile

A

continuously cycle to regenerate tissue. they have stem cells that continue to regnerate. examples: small and large bowel, skin and bone marrow

Q

What is stable

A

are quiescent but can renter the cell cycle. examples are liver through hyperplasia.

Q

What is permanent

A

lack regenerative potential. ex. skeletal, myocardium and neurons

8
Q

What does granulation tissue have

A

granulation tissue that contains fibroblast (type 3 collagen), capillaries( provide nutrient) and myofibroblast (contact wound).

Q

What happens to granulation tissue

A

it forms a scar

10
Q

How does granulation tissue form a scar

A

it does this with changing the type 3 collagen to type 1 collagen through collagenase that removes type 3 and requires zinc to happen.

Q

What is the mechanism of regeneration and repair

A

mediated by paracrine signaling through growth factors. interaction of factors with the receptors results in gene expression and cellular growth

Q

What are the types of collagen again

A

type 1 collagen- bone
type 2 collagen - cartilage
type 3 collagen - blood vessel and granulation - needs to stretch
type 4 collagen - Basement membrane

Q

What is primary union

A

where the wound edges brought together for minimal scar formation

14
Q

What is secondary union

A

edges are not approximated and the granulation tissue fills in the defect. this results in big scar and causes contraction of the wound.

Q

What is delayed wound healing

A

what there is a wound that doesn’t healing in the typical time that it should.

16
Q

What causes delayed wound healing

A

infection, vitamin C, copper, or zinc deficiency and other problems like foreign body, ischemia, diabetes and malnutrition

17
Q

What is keloid?

A

excess production of scar tissue that is out of proportion to the wound. it is characterized by type 3 collagen and is genetic predisposition. common affects earlobes, face and upper extremities

18
Q

What is hypertrophic scar

A

excess production of scar but local to the location of wound. Mainly is type 1 collagen.
