Superficial

Answer 1

• Epidermis remains intact
• Ex: non-blistering sunburn
• Heals as part of the inflammatory process

Question 2

Partial-thickness

Answer 2

• Through the epidermis, possibly into but NOT through the dermis
• Ex: abrasions, blisters, skin tears
• Heals by re-epithelialization or epidermal resurfacing (depending on depth)

Question 3

Full-thickness

Answer 3

• Through the dermis into deeper structures, such as subcutaneous fat
• Wounds > 4mm
• Heal by secondary intention

Subcutaneous wound

• Through integ tissues and involved deeper structures such as subcutaneous fat, muscle, tendon or bone
• Heal by secondary intention
