Breathing Patterns Flashcards
1
Q
Apnea
A
Absence of spontaneous breathing
2
Q
Biot’s
A
- Irregular breathing; breaths vary in depth and rate with periods of apnea
- Often associated with increased intracranial pressure or damage to the medulla
3
Q
Bradypnea
A
- Slower than normal, < 12 breaths/min
- May be associated with neurological or electrolyte disturbance or infection
- Also seen in highly active healthy adults
4
Q
Cheyne-Stokes (periodic)
A
- Decreasing rate + depths of breathing with periods of apnea
- Can occur due to central nervous system damage
5
Q
Eupnea
A
Normal rate + depth of breathing
6
Q
Hypernea
A
Increases rate + depth of breathing
7
Q
Hypopnea
A
Decrease rate and depth of breathing
8
Q
Kussmaul’s
A
- Deep and fast breathing
- Associated with metabolic acidosis
9
Q
Paradoxical
A
- Chest wall moves IN with inhalation and OUT with exhalation
- Due to chest trauma or paralysis of the diaphragm
10
Q
Tachypnea
A
- Faster than normal RR
- > 20 breaths/min
