Worship at home Flashcards
How long does Shabbat in the home last
25 hours (Friday Sunset to Saturday Sunset)
What do Jews do before Shabbat starts
Prepare food and do things around the house that can’t do during Shabbat
Order of events of worship in the home
Kabbalat Shabbat, Kiddush, Blessing of Hallot, Shabbat meal, and Havdalah
What is Kabbalat Shabbat
A ceremony that takes place just before sundown on Shabbat and involves the lighting of at least two candles. Songs are sung to welcome the ‘Shabbat angels’ into the home and praise the woman of the house
What is Kiddush
A blessing is sung (usually by the man of the house) over a completely full cup of wine)
What is the blessing of hallot
The blessing is then said over the ballot or challah (two loaves of braided bread, representing the manna the Israelites ate in the wilderness)
What is the Shabbat Meal
Meat or fish is traditionally served, and people may sing hymns during the meal
What is Havdalah
The final blessing of Shabbat again involves the lighting of a candle, a blessing over a cup of wine, smelling sweet spices, and finally extinguishing the candle in the wine. The ritual is supposed to involve all of the senses
What does lighting the candles involve
A member of the family (usually the mother) 18 minutes before sunset, lights the candles and welcomes the Shabbat. She says a blessing and prays asking God to bless her family during Shabbat
What does the Friday meal involve
The father of the household blesses the children and recites Kiddush (blessing done over wine), everyone washes their hands as a sign of purification then sits for the meal, bread is cut and passed around to everyone, the meal begins- then ends with prayers of thanksgiving
3 reasons Shabbat in the home is important
-taking time for family bonds them as people together
-the lighting of the candles shows the positions of the family members
-Family is a gift from God and to bond together is important to know each other better
