What does the Old Testament consist of
39 books, written mostly in Hebrew. About God and Israel before the time of Jesus
What does the New Testament consist of
27 books, story of the incarnation of God. Mostly, they were written in Greek, the language of scholars at the time of Jesus
What four things does the Old Testament consist of
Law, History, Wisdom, and Prophecy
History in the Old Testament
This gives the History of the people of the Old Testament (Jews) e.g. the Book of Kings
Law in the Old Testament
The first 5 books in the Bible which give people the rules to live by (10 commandments in Exodus 20)
Wisdom in the Old Testament
This gives teachings about God and how to use our God-given talents (Psalms, Proverbs, Song of Songs)
Prophecy in the Old Testament
This section has the lives of the prophets who challenged people to stay faithful to God (Isaiah, Micah)
What 4 things does the New Testament consist of
Gospels, Acts of the Apostles, Letters, and Revelation
Gospels in the New Testament
Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John- They tell the life of Jesus
Acts of the Apostles in the New Testament
Tells of the start of the early church up to about 60 AD
Letters in the New Testament
Written to early church communities by people such as St. Paul, and explain how to live as a Christian (first letter to the Corinthians)
Revelation in the New Testament
A book written by John which some believe describes the end of the world
3 reasons the 10 commandments are important
Given as a covenant to Jews, teaches Christians how to best honor God, and improve our relationship with him
How are the 10 commandments divided
6 about relationship, and 4 about God’s relationship with man, based on the first 6
What is the greatest commandment
When Jesus says this is the greatest commandment: To love God and love your neighbor “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind…you shall love your neighbor as yourself”
