What is baptism?
First step towards being part of the body of Christ
What is the purpose of baptism?
Frees us from sin-salvation, sacrament of initiation
Why are children baptized in the Catholic church and some other churches?
To free them from darkness, cleansing of original sin, and be baptized into the faith of the community
Who can be baptized?
Anyone, as long as you haven’t already been baptized
What is used during baptism and why? (3)
-oil (anointing)
-white garment (cleansed, purity)
-candle (enlightened by christ)
Who can baptize?
Anyone for an emergency, usually priests or decans
What are the words used at a baptism?
You are baptized in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and the Spirit, Amen.
What are common misconceptions about baptism?
That Catholics only baptize babies, and that the Godparents must be married

3 reasons why people believe infant baptism should be done
Cleanses original sin, welcomes a child into God’s family, allows the child to take other sacraments as they grow up
What is a believer’s baptism?
Baptism occurs as a sign that someone has chosen to follow Jesus. This form of baptism usually involves the practice of immersion
What is immersion
When the believer is completely lowered into the water, imitating the baptism of Jesus and done as a sign of leaving behind the old sinful life and rising out of the water to have a new life in Christ
3 points on believers baptism
- the emphasis is placed on the person making a conscious decision
- Most denominations believe that baptism isn’t just symbolic, but that it causes real transformation
- The adult asks God for forgiveness of their sins and publicly commits themself to following the Christian faith
