Western Front
Western Europe (border of Germany and France) where Britain and the US fought Germany.
Allies
Group of nations opposing the Axis Powers including United States, Britain, and the Soviet Union
Axis Powers
Germany, Italy, Japan, which formed an alliance in 1936
Pacific Theater
An area in the Pacific Ocean where warfare took place between the Allies and Japan
European Theater
Area of heavy fighting in Europe between the Axis Powers and the Allies
Blitzkrieg
“Lightning war”; fast moving planes and tanks, followed by infantry forces. Designed to take enemies by surprise and quickly overwhelm them.
Lend-Lease Act
A policy where the US aided its allies by transferring supplies and arms without compensation.
Atlantic Charter
A declaration from Churchill and Roosevelt that outlined their hopes for a post-war world. Free trade among nations and right of people to choose their own government.
Vichy
Southern part of France (after Germans took over north) governed by a puppet gov’t led by Phillippe Petain
Genocide
Mass murder targeted at a specific group of people.
Aryans
Name for languages/people who invaded India from Europe; Hitler used it to mean white people.
Ghettos
Segregated Jewish areas
Holocaust
The murder of millions of Jews during WW2
Nuremburg Trials
Trials held by the Allies to bring German war criminals to justice.
