Working Memory Model Flashcards
The Central Executive
Controls activity of working memory, manages and prioritizes what goes on. Focuses on one part of the memory.
The Phonological Loop
The auditory store, rehearses sound based information to prevent loss of that memory. Has two subdivisions.
The Articulatory Control System
Subsystem of Phonological Loop, apart of speech production. Rehearses to prevent decay of verbal material until it’s used.
The Phonological Store
Subsystem of Phonological Loop, keeps acoustic memories by rehearsing them to prevent decay until use.
Visuo-spatial Sketchpad
Often referred to as the ‘inner eye’. Considered as a visual and spatial version of the articulatory loop. Temporarily holds image and spatial information, helps us with finding our way around, like a mental map.
The Episodic Buffer
Integrates information from the Phonological loop, Visuo-spatial Sketchpad, and Long-term Memory. Helps us maintain a sense of time, so we remember the sequence in which things happened.
