Experimental Designs Flashcards
Experimental Designs
Process of allocating participants to experimental conditions. Could be the same people in two conditions or different people in two conditions.
Independent Measures Design
Uses different people in each experimental condition. Each participant is randomly allocated to one condition.
Repeated Measures Design
Each participant does the experiment for the number of total conditions.
Counterbalancing
All participant groups do the conditions, they swap from day to day doing different ones. With just two groups they swap. Order effects appear in both.
Randomization
Participants randomly assigned to do one of the conditions. Participants have an equal chance of appearing in any of the conditions.
Matched Pairs Design
Involves two groups of participants who are matched by an important variable to make them similar. Ideal participants in matched pairs design are twins, as close to being matched as possible.
