Explanations for Forgetting Flashcards
Interference
Can be used to explain forgetting for both long-term and short-term memory. Similar materials interfering with each other.
Retroactive Interference
Jenkins & Dallenbach (1924): Where new memories that are formed interfere or replace older memories.
Proactive Interference
Wickens (1972): When older information is interfering with the attempt of learning new information.
Retrieval Failure
Retrieving memories efficiently when effective retrieval cues match at both encoding and retrieval.
Context Dependent Learning
Godden and Baddeley (1975): Recalling information is much easier when recalling in the same place that you learned the information in.
State Dependent Learning
Carter and Cassaday (1998): Learning and recalling information when in different states of mind. On drugs or not on drugs when learning or recalling.
