working memory model Flashcards
Who suggested the WMM?
Baddeley and Hitch
What is the WMM
a store that allows four conscious through made of three slave cycles controlled by the central executive, which lows us to solve problems and preform tasks
what are the four components of the WMM?
the central executive, the phonological loop (made up of the phonological store an the articualtory process
What is the central executive?
(the conscious awareness) the thing that coordinates the other three slave systems
What is the phonological loop?
the thing that allows us to remember verbal information
What is the phonological store?
the store of words you can hear , encoded acoustically
What is the articulatory process?
when written information is converted to verbal information before it enters the phonological store
What is the visuo-spartial sketchpad (VSS)?
the visual or spartial (environment) information store
What does Baddeley say about the VSS?
it has a capacity of 3-4 objects
What does Logie say about the VSS?
it is made up of two subdivisions: the visual cache (stores visual data) and the inner scribe (records the arrangement of objects visually)
What is the episodic buffer?
temporary store for the central executive that can integrate information from the other slave loops to the long term memory and to wider cognitive processes. it also has a capacity of four chunks.
How did Baddeley provide evidence for the phonological loop and visuo-spartial sketchpad
he got one group of participants to describe the letter F whilst tracking a light and the other group to do a this and verbal task. he found that participants had more difficulty doing the two visual tasks as they both used the VSS so were in competition were as the other group used separate system so proving the existence of the PL and VSS
what are the criticisms of the WMM?
the central executive is too simple as in the WMM its just explained as attention but psychologists believe it may be made up of different components
how did Baddeley demonstrate the separate existence of the visuo-spartial sketchpad and phonological loop?
he used the duel task technique giving participants 2 visual tasks r a visual and verbal task, participants found it harder when the tasks were the same as they used the same slave loop so they were in competition
how does KF illustrate the separate existence of the visuo-spartial sketchpad and phonological loop?
he is able to recall information that he reads but he is unable to recall or remember information that s read to him suggesting that his phonological loop is damaged but his visuo-spartial sketchpad is still intact
