Q

What is the central executive?

A

-co ordinates activities of these sub systems in a memory
-allocates processing information to those activities
-very limited processing capacity

Q

What is the phonological loop?

A

-processes auditory information in terms of sound and language
AC- inner voice- repeat sounds or in a loop to keep them in working memory
coding - acoustic
-capacity- 2 seconds

Q

What is the visuospatial sketchpad?

A

processes visual and spatial information in a mental space
coding -visually
capacity- limited

Q

What is the episodic buffer?

A

Brings together material from all of the sub systems into a single memory. provides a bridge between working memory and long term memory
-added in year 2000

Q

What is the working memory model?

A

The working memory model is an explanation of how one aspect of memory is organised and how it functions. The wwm is concerned with the mental space that is active when we are temporary storing and manipulating information.

Q

What is Dual task performance?

A

-supports idea of visuospatial sketchpad being a single component
-participants to carry out visual tasks, digit span test and a verbal reasoning task
-performance on both tasks were similair

Q

What did Shallice and Warrington suggest?

A
  • case study of KF
-Supportive evidence that there are separate systems for working memory as kf had poor stm for sound but could process visual information normally.

Q

What did Braver et el do?

A
  • brain scanning
-tasks involving central excetutive found greater activity in prefrontal cortex, activity increased as task got harder

Q

What are the research methods?

A

Dual task performance]
- artificial stimuli- digit span test
-high control in lab conditions -reduces extraneous variables- more replicable and reliable
