explanations of forgetting Flashcards
What is interference?
- forgetting because one memory blocks another causing one or both memories to become distorted or forgotten.
What is retroactive interference
Forgetting occurs when newer memories disrupt recall of old memories
What is proactive interference
older memories disrupt recall of newer memories
What did Schmidt do?
-200 former students of a school were given a blank map of the schools in the local area
- asked to write down as many street names as they know
-personal details were asked such as how many times they had moved house or where they lived
What are the results of Schmidt experiment?
-The amount of times people had moves house the more streets they had forgotten
What type of interference did Schmidt look at?
Retroactive interference because learning new street names disrupts recall of older street names.
How is interference the strongest?
When memories are similar
What didMcgeoh and Mcdonald discover?
Interference is worse when the memories are similar
-They studied retroactive interference by changing the amount of similarity between two sets of materials, participants had to learn a list of 10 words until they could remember them with 100% accuracy. They then learnt a new list of 10 words .
When participants were asked to recall the original list, the most similar words produced the worst recall (synonyms)
