Woods and manmade wood Flashcards
What is a hardwood
Not necessarily hard, they come from broad-leaved deciduous trees who have enclosed seeds, grown in warmer climates and take up to 100 years to grow with also having a close grain, they are stronger than soft woods.
name some hardwoods
Oak - construction, garden and high quality furniture - strong durable and works well but is expensive, heavy and prone to splitting.
Mahogany - veneers, floor boards and furniture - durable,
easy to work and finishes well but it is prone to warping.
Beech - Construction, roof joists, floor boards and furniture. - hard, suitable and polishes well but can be difficult to work as its prone to warping.
What is a soft wood
Soft wood is wood that comes from evergreen trees such as the ones with pine-cones and needles, having an open grain and normally taking around 30 years to grow.
Name the main softwood
Pine - Construction, roof joists, floor boards and furniture - straight grain and easy to work but prone to warping and has knots.
What are bad with knots?
They can leave holes in the wood and are very tough, so difficult to remove.
What is a man made wood?
A wood created by man, usually containing scrap wood such as chip board as a substitute for actual wood.
Name at least 3 of the 4 man made woods (Pt.1)
MDF - made from wood waste - Furniture, kitchen units - they have no grains and are available in different sizes, but can be very heavy when wet, while also warping.
Chipboard - made from wood particles being glued together under heat and pressure - flat pack internal doors - norm medium dense weights but warps in wet conditions.
Name at least 3 of the 4 man made woods (Pt.2)
Plywood - construction, roofing, flat pack - no warping but can de-laminate if wet.
Laminates - two or more layers of material bonded together - flat pack furniture - cant warp and its easy to cut and shape, but not very aesthetically pleasing
What is a veneer?
A coating, an extra layer
