Quality (TQM, QA, QC, BSI) Flashcards
What is quality? (Designing terms)
it refers to a products ability to satisfy a need and its fitness for purpose
What is quality? (Manufacturing terms)
producing a product to the best it can be, fully functioning and free from defects.
What are the three processes in quality control in production?
Manufacturing process, assembly process then the finishing processes.
What is quality assurance? (QA)
they are systems that are the planned activities used by the manufacture to monitor the quality of a product from its design and development stage.
What is quality control? (QC)
The part of quality assurance that involves inspection and testing of a product, during or after production.
Why is inspection used in QC?
Its used to check that manufactured products have been produced within a specified tolerance.
What is tolerance?
Its defined as the acceptable amount by which a products size can differ from what’s stated in the spec.
What can be an example of tolerance?
the diameter of a plastic bottle so it fits in the bottle making machinery.
What are the three main levels of inspection?
- 100% inspection - all units in the batch are inspected
- Normal inspection - through a sampling plan
- Reduced inspection - using a sampling plan requiring smaller sizes
What are the two different types of testing?
- Non - destructive testing - the product is tested until it shows signs of failing e.g cracking
- Destructive testing - where the product is destroyed under controlled conditions
What is TQM?
A strategic system for achieving customer satisfaction using QA at all stages during manufacture.
What does BSI stand for?
British Standards Institute.
What does the BSI do?
Operates a quality management system to which any organisation can be accredited, giving them a logo on their products so customers know their product is assured of quality.
What are the three quality standards in R.M?
National, European and International.
What does ISO stand for?
International organisation for standardisation
