Bearings Flashcards
What does a plain bearing do?
A support that holds a rotating shaft
What do bearings in general do?
because friction and wear will take place, bearings reduce that by allowing the shafts to spin more efficiently.
What does friction do to the material?
wears it down and makes the shaft spin more inefficiently.
What is a sleeve of bearing material called?
A bush.
What is a bush usually made out of?
bronze
what is a disadvantage of using a bush to support bearings by adding some kind of ‘bearing material’
overtime it has to be removed or replaced
Why is nylon a good choice for a bush?
Its a self lubricating material and some ceramics are being used
What are ceramic bearings?
bearings that are produced through the sintering process
How is a journal bearing different from a plain bearing?
it has a layer of grease or oil between the rotating shaft and support
What is a ball bearing?
spherical steel balls are held in a ball race tat allows the inner race to spin independently from the outer race
