Metals and casting Flashcards
What are the two ways of casting metal?
Sand casting and die casting
What can you make from die casting?
Taps, model cars
What can you make from sand casting
‘the slingshot’ , caterpillar tracks, engine blocks, garden furniture
What is die casting
Forcing molten metal under high pressure into a die, or allowing molten metal to flow into a mould by gravity
What is sand casting
molten metal is poured into a sand mould that contains a cavity of the desired shape of an object or component
Name 2 advantages of die casting
- high production rate
- good surface finish
- elements such as screw threads can be included in casting
- good control over mould temperatures during the process
Name 2 disadvantages of die casting
- high set up costs
- long lead time
- limited sizes possible
- not all alloys are suitable for the process
Name 2 disadvantages of sand casting
- mould can only be used once
- slow production rate
- labour intensive
Name 2 advantages of sand casting
- inexpensive
- complex shapes are produced
- large components are produced
Name the three different types of metals
- Ferrous - metals that contain iron
- Non - ferrous - metals that contain no iron
- Alloys - metals including two or more metals coming together as one
Name examples of ferrous metals
- Cast iron - machinery, components for machines
- mild steel - nuts and bolts, general engineering
- carbon steel - drills, cutting tools
Name example of Non-ferrous metals
- Aluminium - castings, engine components, aircraft
- copper - electrical cables, central heating
- zinc - castings, batteries
Name examples of alloys
- stainless steel - medical tools, kitchen utensils
- Duralumin - Auto mobiles, aviation
- Brass - plumbing fittings, electrical components
