Gears Flashcards
What three things can gears be used to do?
- change direction in rotary motion
- change spindle speeds
- transmit motion through 90 degrees
When gears mesh together, what are the called?
Spur-gears
What mechanical devices can be linked to any type of gear?
Bikes (pedalling) , centre lathes (rotating), Car engines, tanks, motor bikes.
What gear drives the other gear(s) around?
Driver
What is the smaller gear the driver turns around called?
Driven
If the driver is turning clockwise, what direction would the driven turn?
Anti-clockwise
Which gear is faster, Driven or Driver?
Driven
What is the purpose of a idler between a driver and driven?
Makes them both turn in the same direction
The more teeth its has, the slower it turns. True or false?
True
What is a compound gear?
A number of gears fixed together.
What is a gear train?
Its usually made up of two or more gears.
What does a pinion do?
rotates upon a rack using its teeth
Why are racks and pinions used in mountainous areas on trains?
Steel wheels cant grip with steel tracks, without the teeth on the pinion the train would be sliding back
What else can a pinion and rack be found in?
steering systems
What other types of gears can you find except for pinion and track and spur gears?
Worm and wheel ( used in food mixers, transmits force and motion through 90 degrees) and Bevel & Mitre ( can have shafts at 90 degrees and seen on hand drills)
