Wood Bending Flashcards
What is laminating
Multiple sheets of wood veneer are formed using moulds and bonded together using strong adhesives, to produce strong lightweight structures
Step by step of laminating
Adhesive is applied to the face of each veneer
Veneers are stacked
veneers are clamped in a die
Adhesive dries and shape is formed.
Advantages of laminating
Suitable for one-off batch and mass production
can accommodate for a range of thicknesses
create strong and lightweight components
can be combined with other materials to enhance properties such as snowboards
disadvantages of laminating
involves many steps
Restricted to bends in a single direction
materials used in laminating and an example
birch
Eames lounge chair and ottoman
What is steam bending
The moistening of certain woods to a point where it becomes pliable
step by step of steam bending
wood is put in a steamer
wood is steamed and softened
wood is flexible and pliable
advantages of steam bending
good aesthetic appeal
most effective technique for bending solid wood
can be done with simple equipment
parts with strong weight to strength ratio can be produced
Steam bent can produce loads of shapes
disadvantages of steam bending
Only hard, high quality wood is used
Not suitable for applications that involve precision
Bent radius is dependant on the type of wood used.
woods used in this process and example
Oak for construction
Beech and oak for furniture
Elm Ash and Willow for boat making
Maple for musical instruments
no 14 chair
what is kerfing
making a series of grooves in wood until it can bend
step by step
lots of grooves are made in the underside of wood
spaces between compress and it bends
advantages of kerfing
Very tight angles can be achieved
can be strengthened with a bar
Lots of thicknesses and types of wood can be kerfed
disadvantages of kerfing
very weak
no tensile strength
cannot withstand any other bending
woods used in kerfing
oak, mahogany and ash- hardwoods
