Textiles Flashcards
What are the advantages of cotton?
Comfortable
Sustainable
Supports farmers and Communities
Hypoallergenic
Odour Free
Versatile
What are the disadvantages of cotton?
Not a particularly strong fabric.
Absorbent and heavy
Takes a long time to dry
Poor elasticity.
Shrinks and creases
Highly flammable
Attacked by mildew if left damp.
What are the advantages of linen?
Highly absorbent
Comfort and moisture wicking properties
Durability and longevity
Eco-friendly and sustainable
Temperature regulating properties
Versatile and low maintenance
Health benefits
What are the disadvantages of linen?
Linen gets crinkled easily
Bleaching and dying linen Makes it lose its biodegradable properties
Uses less water than cotton
What are the advantages of wool?
Naturally breathable down to fiber level.
Keeps you dry, good water resistance.
Warm when wet
Does not stink
Excellent temperature resistance
High warmth to weight ratio
Not itchy
Absorbs and repels
What are disadvantages of wool?
Very expensive material
Very prone to distortion by agitation with jet marks
Stained easily by household items.
Bad chemical sensitivity, often becomes brittle and felts with alkaline solutions over 9.5.
What are the advantages of nylon?
Good Elasticity - This is very important in heavy traffic areas where furniture may be dragged across the carpet.
Very Abrasion Resistant
Static Resistant – Not its ancestry, but today’s fibers do very well.
Heat Sets Well – When properly heat set, nylon retains its crimp, twist, and dye extremely well.
Good resiliency – Nylon can be crushed for long periods and still regain its original shape.
Non-Absorbent
Mildew Resistant – Nylon provides no food source.
Nylon responds very well to most professional cleaning methods and treatments.
What are the disadvantages of nylon?
Nylon is almost always acid dyed. It is rarely solution dyed, so it can have problems with bleaching, fading, urine reactions,
What are the advantages of PP?
High heat deflection temperature (HDT)
Durability
Low cost to produce
Dimensional stability
Low density
Stiffness
Abrasion resistance
High tensile strength
Chemical resistance
What are the disadvantages of PP?
Bad resistance to sunlight, so not suitable for curtains
Difficult to dye
Not biodegradable
Doesn’t absorb water.
How does flame resistance work?
Once a fire starts on an object treated with a char foam-inducing flame retardant, a chemical reaction within the retardant bubbles up to create a rigid, inflammable foam out of the char from the initial burning. This char foam then insulates the fuel from oxygen and, to some extent, heat
