Guages Flashcards
What are the advantages of gauges?
Good for rough work
What are the disadvantages of gauges?
Parallax error easy to sit pin in wrong decision
Grain tends to make pin wander
Expensive on roller wheel cuts into grain
Not extremely accurate
Describe a marking gauge?
Has a fence that can be moved and locked along a beam. Single pin to scribe one line. It is used primarily for scribing tenons and dovetail shoulder lines. The pin is fixed and the fence can be locked.
Describe a cutting gauge?
Like a marking gauge but uses a knife on a roller.
Describe a mortise gauge?
2 pins to scribe both sides of a mortise simultaneously. Some have a pin on one side so it can be used as a regular marker.
What is an engineering tolerance?
The range of values that are accepted by the engineer for the part to be made.
What is the nominal value?
The desired dimension
What would a nominal value of 10 with a tolerance of 0.1 look like.
10+/-0.1
What would a nominal value of 10 with a lower limit of 0.1 be.
10 +0
10 -0.1
Problems with a Go or NO go gauge?
Gauge wears down over time.
Does not check for concentricity i.e whether it is buckled in some way.
Have a non-perfection mentality
What is a go or no gauge?
An inspection tool used to check a workplace against its tolerated values via a go/no go test.
