Metals Flashcards
what is strength?
The strength of a material is how much tensile force it can take before it snaps.
What is elasticity
The elasticity of a material is the maximum length it can be stretched to, and return to its original length within the limit of elasticity.
What is plasticity
The plasticity of a material is the maximum the maximum force it can take after the limit of elasticity, before it snaps.
What is ductility
The ductility of a material is its ability to be drawn into wires easily.
What is malleability
The malleablility of a material is whether it can be hammered into another shape.
What is brittleness
The brittleness of a material is how much impact force a material can take before it shatters or bends
what is resilience
The resilience of a material is how much elastic force it can be put under before being deformed plastically.
what is toughness
The toughness of a material is how much impact force the material can absorb
what is hardness
The hardness of a material is either how resistant it is to abrasive force, or to surface indentation
what is fatigue
The fatigue of a material is how many cycles it can go for at the same force before it snaps
what is creep
The creep of a material is its strength under elevated temperature conditions
what is wear resistance
The wear resistance of a material is a materials ability to resist material loss in a mechanical action
What is damping capacity
The damping capacity of a material is how well the material can dissipate elastic strain during vibration or other movements.
