What are the gender differences in adult friendships?
women have fewer friends, closer friends, more disclosure whereas men have more friends that are superficial, less disclosure
What are cross-gender friendship?
social construction, society tells us that we cant cross-gender friendships
What are the ideal dating partners?
deals with the type of relationship we want. short-term=more attractiveness for both men, women but more so for men. long-term: physical attractiveness drops, ideas such as honesty rise to the top

cognitive models that guide individual dating interactions
What has marriage been historically?
historically marriage was about property rights, women were property to their husbands
What is marriage today?
love, commitment
What are the benefits to marriage?
men, women in healthy marriages are mentally, physically healthier, men benefit more.
What is marital satisfaction?
establishment, child-bearing, aging, post-parental(empty nest)
What are the styles of marriage?
companionship, independence, interdependence
What is companionship?
similarities of partners in terms of similar characteristics for matching, maintained traditional roles, stability. women are responsible for maintaining relationship, men develop personal interest
What is interdependence?
shared commitment (equality), responsibility, and partners depend on one another. Traditional roles are not maintained, their is stable relationship, both men, women are responsible for maintaining relationship, developing personal interest.
What is relative power?
power in marriage comes from work-related resources
What are the three patterns of power in marriage?
Traditional, modern, egalitarian
What is traditional marriage?
women not being employed, control over house, children, and ultimately husbands have control in relationship
What is modern marriage?
wife working outside of the home with husbands encouragement, but her job is secondary , and husband still has more power
