What happened to the Suffragettes in prison? What did they do?
In 1903, the suffragettes, who were in prison, started going on hunger strikes. In response, the government began force-feeding them with tubes.
What happened in 1918?
In 1918, the representation of the people act was passed, allowing men over the age of 21 to vote, and women over 30 the right to vote.
What happened in 1919?
In 1919, Nancy Astor became the first female MP to sit in the house of commons.
What happened in 1928?
In 1928, everybody over the age of 21 becomes allowed to vote.
What were attitudes toward women like back in 1900?
In 1900, they were viewed as people who should stay at home and take care of children.
What tactics did the NUWSS group use in order to get women to right to vote?
They used peaceful tactics. They:
- Wrote letters to politicians.
- Wrote articles
- Produced petitions
- Held meetings.
- Tried to gain the support of MPs.
What tactics did WSPU use?
WPSU:
- Heckled up and broke up political meetings.
- Smashed windows with stones.
- Went on Hunger strikes in prisons.
What were the arguments made against giving women the vote?
The arguments were that:
- Women were the weaker sex and needed to be protected from politics.
- Women were too emotional to deal with voting.
