WK7: Key Words Flashcards
Acromegaly
Condition of hyperplasia prompted by hormone stimulation of excessive growth after closure of the epiphyseal growth plates of the long bones.
Cretinism
A condition of mental retardation and impaired growth from a congenital lack of thyroid hormone production and secretion
Exophthalmos
A protrusion of the eyeballs that sometimes occurs with hyperthyroidism.
Hypofunction
Associated with deficit of hormone production
Hyperfunction
Associated with excessive hormone production
Hormone resistance
Associated with receptor defects at the target cells
Hirsutism
A condition of excessive body and facial hair.
Hypopituitarism
decreased secretion of one or more pituitary hormones
Hyperpituitarism:
increased secretion of one or more pituitary hormone
Hyperthyroidism
A state of excessive thyroid hormone as a result of excessive
stimulation of the thyroid gland, diseases of the thyroid gland or excess production of
thyroid-stimulating hormone
Infertility
The inability to achieve pregnancy after 1 year of unprotected intercourse
Myxedema
A condition of hypothyroidism marked by the accumulation of boggy, nonpitting edematous tissue, especially of the face, mucous membranes, hands, and
feet, from protein-carbohydrate complexes
Panhypopituitarism
a deficiency in ALL anterior pituitary hormones
Polyuria
Frequent, larger volume urination
stress
The reaction of the body to forces of a deleterious nature that disturbs homeostasis
Osteoporosis
Condition characterized by decreased bone mass and deterioration of bone tissue
- associated with increased bone fragility and susceptibility to fracture
paracrine
Hormone effects restricted to the local environment
Goiter
enlargement of thyroid gland caused by follicular epithelial cell hyperplasia from excessive thyroid hormone exposure
Thyrotoxicosis
Hypermetabolic state caused by elevated circulating levels of free T3 and T4
( the presence of excessive circulating thyroid hormone)
