WK:11 Key Words Flashcards
Altered Nutrition
Anemia
The reduction in the mass circulating blood cells and subsequently reduced haemoglobin levels
Bioavailability
: Refers to a mineral that is unbound and must remain unbound ( also calledstate) to be absorbed
Hypochromic
Indicates pale red blood cells on microscopic examination
Kwashiorkor
Protein deprivation in persons consuming adequate carbohydrates
Lacteal
Lymphatic channel within each small intestinal villus, critical for the absorption of fats.
Lanugo
A fine downy hair that covers the body in some patients with anorexia nervosa
Macronutrient
Nutrient category of proteins, carbohydrates and fats
Malabsorption
Indicates a lack of movement of specific nutrients across the
gastrointestinal mucosa
Marasmus
A condition of starvation related to deprivation of all food
Microcytic
Cells are small
- the term is often used to describe small red blood cells in certain types of anemia
Micronutrient
Nutrient category of vitamins and minerals
Nutrient
A food or liquid that supplies the body with the chemicals needed for metabolism
Obesity
A state of excessive body fat in which the body mass index is greater than 30 kg/m2
Overnutrition
A state of excessive exposure to nutrients
Undernutrition
A lack of intake of nutrients most often related to inadequate calorie consumption, inadequate intake of essential vitamins and minerals
- or problems with digestion, absorption, or distribution of nutrients in the body
Overweight
Defined as a body mass index between 25 and 30 kg/m2
Pica (Pagophagia)
the compulsion to eat ice or non-food substances such as dirt or clay
Poikilocytosis
The irregular shape of red blood cells are iron deficient.
Satiety
A feeling of gastric fullness, usually associated with eating
Vitamin
Micronutrient organic substances that the body is unable to manufacture and therefore must consume
Mortality
The death rate resulting from a disease
Staging
A process of classifying the extent or spread of the disease from the site of origin
Debridement
A process of mechanically removing debris, including necrotic tissue, from a wound
Hypochromic
Indicates pale red blood cells on microscopic examination
Erythema
Redness caused by increased blood flow to the tissue
Endemic
A condition in which the incidence and prevalence are stable and predictable
Paracrine
Hormone effect restricted to the local environment
Cancer
A term used to describe highly invasive and destructive neoplasms
Ulcer
Circumscribed, open, craterlike lesion of the skin or mucous membranes
Esptropia
Suppression of one visual images by the brain, preserving normal vision
Seeding
A form of direct extension where neoplastic proliferation occurs within peritoneal and pleural cavities surrounding the affected tissue or organ
Incidence
The rate of occurrence of a health condition at any given time
Metastases
Process that occurs when neoplasms are spread to distant sites often by way of the lymphatics or blood vessels
